Last time I blogged it was on my rather worrying upcoming visit to my local Writers Group  and the possibility of my “coming out” (you will have to read the previous blog to understand that!) and this is the follow up.

So, in summary, I went and it was great! What was I worried about? It’s always terrifying for me to walk into a room full of people I don’t know but I managed it, found a seat next to someone else who was also quite new, I was told,  and I settled down to see what would happen. The theme for the evening was to bring along a 500 word story which was then to be read out and critiqued. I had not brought anything L which was not a surprise – even if I had I know I wouldn’t have read it out – baby steps people, baby steps…

Anyway about ten stories were read and they were really good. Very different, some funny, some sad, some thought provoking and they covered a variety of differing and interesting styles of writing but all were entertaining. The critique and comments made were helpful as any feedback is to a writer.

It was great to be in a room full of people with the same interest though I imagine with a huge range in the type and amount of writing they’ve done or are planning to do and I’m eager to learn more.

Next month’s task is to write a 250 word flash fiction for a competition. Now this is not something I have ever done but I suspect it will be a good discipline for me and will help to tighten up my writing which tends to ramble – if I can only now come up with an idea….?

So I’d encourage anyone to go along to their local writers group. It will widen your horizons, opening your eyes to the way others write and giving you the chance to incorporate something different into your own writing. It will also challenge you to try something different, I’m glad I went though I should add, for those who have read my previous post – there was no one there I knew!

  1. Well done Georgia. I hope you continue to enjoy it and get a lot out of it. You’ll have to keep us updated. 🙂

    • Thanks Diane, I’ve written my flash fiction piece and really enjoyed doing it – much easier to bash into shape than a novel!! I’ll let you know how it is received!

  2. Glad to hear it was a success, Georgia! I’ve been thinking about you and wondering how it went. Good luck with the 250 word flash fiction. It’s something I’ve not tried before but never say never… 😉 Maybe with the light at the end of the novel- editing tunnel, I might have the brain space to give it a try!

    • Thanks Wendy – I would really recommend giving flash fiction a go. I found it very refreshing to work on something so short and I’m quite pleased with the outcome. It will be interesting to see what the group think of it. However I am now turning my concentration back to novel editing so will be buried for a while!
