I’ve never actually been diagnosed with OCD, but I definitely have some of the traits. As I look round my desk now I find comfort in the things I have lined up in the way I want them, though they may not be stereotypically precise. The issues I have are more commonly about having things completed, however temporarily, and moved to one side so that my mind is clear and I can concentrate fully on something else.

My worst scenario is when I’m firefighting… not literally…

But when I’m having to respond to emails/phone/mobile/clients calling round in person and jumping from one set of accounts to another answering queries and dealing with problems. I end up under a mountain of paperwork and with dozens of computer files open.

That is no good for me.

It is hard to clear one’s mind of business and allow the creative side out to play when the day job is like that. In my perfect world I would have everything else up to date and packed away so that I would know I could focus on the writing I want to do without worry of interruption. Of course that never happens so I have to make the best of the situation and try and ignore everything else that is calling out for my attention.

I’ve started blocking out writing time in two hour sessions this week. Some days that has worked better than on others. But it has allowed me to get a few words down, as you will see shortly, and I’ve kept up with my blogging schedule.

This week has still meant a lot of GDPR work but I shall not linger on that topic as I’m sure, like me, you are heartily sick of it.

The really terrific news though is that my entry for the flash fiction competition for the Bloggers Bash came 3rd!! Yay!! This was an international competition and I am yet to see the full list of results but I know that first was:

The Queen’s Dress Down Day

And I came third with:

The Proverbial Fairytale

At the moment I have no idea who came second but if anyone who reads this knows please leave me a comment as I’d like to go and read it.

So, that just leaves the word count…

Project B – Hill of Beans –  previously 5532 words – still 5532 words.

Project C – Parallel Lies sequel – previously 5036 words – now  6275 words.

So not great, but it’s something. Onward!

Have a terrific week everyone 😀

  1. Still better than no progress at all, at least, that’s what I tell myself!

  2. I agree with you Georgia, admin etc. can get overwhelming and I find if I’m not careful I flit from one task to another in despair and don’t completely follow through. Bad plan!
Allocating a designated writing slot is a really good idea. Being currently in the throes of dealing with… let’s just call it “health issues”, my plan is to have a similar regime, but specifically to make sure I allow time to fit in the other side of “life” as well. These situations make you to view your world from a slightly different perspective!

Congratulations on your competition 3rd place, by the way! Great job!

    • Thank you! I can completely understand your change of perspective too. I saw a post on Facebook of what was going on in your life and I send big hugs and positive vibes your way and hope this situation improves for you very soon. It is all about trying to find the correct balance of all the different areas of life isn’t it. Thank so much for reading and commenting. 😀 xx

  3. Congratulations on coming third in the Flash fiction competition! And good luck with your writing goals. I know how hard they are to keep to.

  4. Congratulations on your bronze stars, G! That must be very uplifting 🙂

I have to say, I’ve given up trying to find that ‘balance’ that you and Wendy mention. Writing comes first and that’s that, with some space allowed for basic hygiene and nutrition!! I suppose if I was really, really REALLY dedicated I would conform to that romantic notion of the writer forgetting to eat and waving away a sandwich brought by the spouse, and wearing the same clothes for days while creating the masterpiece. For a start, my shoulders couldn’t take it.

I’m on the last day of a concentrated writing jag (won’t tell you how many words!), though yesterday I did think, bloody hell, look at that gorgeous day, I need to at least feel a bit of it – and hobbled down the road! Now my knee is paying the price, and my elbow, finger and shoulder joints are paying the price for spending 4 days at the laptop.

Listen, people – do all that stuff you really want to do BEFORE the arthritis sets in!!!

    • I can imagine just how many words you have managed in this concentrated session, T! I’m sure you’ve pretty much nailed that next book 😀

I hope you will then give your aching joints the chance to recover, at least for long enough to get you though the next bout. Thank you for breaking off long enough to read and comment though, and yes, I am uplifted 😀

      Onward with the next 1000…
