Some of my most creative thoughts happen when on a dog walk, as do my best conversations with my dog-walking buddy. So I thought I’d invite some of my author friends along to join me and my girls and see if I can find out a little more about them and the book they’ve just released.

Joining me in her walking boots today, and all the way from her home in Switzerland, is Linda Huber, who has come to chat to me on the very day her latest novel, The Attic Room, is released!

Linda Huber

Linda Huber grew up in Glasgow, Scotland, where she trained as a physiotherapist. She spent the next ten years working with neurological patients, and during this time she learned that people have different ways of dealing with stressful events in their lives, and this knowledge still helps her today, in her writing. Linda now lives in Arbon, Switzerland, where she works as a language teacher at a school in a medieval castle on the banks of Lake Constance.

I can’t remember how Linda and I first met but I daresay it had something to do with Twitter. She already has two very well received psychological thrillers published, The Paradise Trees and The Cold, Cold Sea… I’ve read both and can highly recommend. Click on the images if you would like to find out more.

The Paradise TreesThe cold cold sea

Hi Linda, I hope you’ve had a good flight and are ready for a hike across the fields of sunny Cambridgeshire?

I’m all set and can I just say how great it is to be out on a dog-walk again! Our Shiva passed away two years ago and I really miss going walkies – except when it’s pouring…

I usually add a photo of Cambridgeshire here but today there is a fabulous one of Lake Constance… this is what Linda is surrounded with every day – breath-taking! And, I’m sure my Cambridgeshire legs would be complaining pretty quickly if I went walking there 🙂

Now that you’ve got my undivided attention Linda this is your chance to tell me all about The Attic Room , encourage everyone to buy it and then move it up their to-be-read lists?

The Attic Room tells the story of Nina, who lives on the beautiful Isle of Arran in Scotland. On the first page we learn that Claire, Nina’s mother, has died recently. Then, out of the blue, Nina receives a phone call, and begins to wonder about her family. She has inherited a house from a man called John Moore – but who is he? By the time Nina uncovers the secret that went to the grave with Claire, both she and her ten-year-old daughter are in terrible danger…

Having published The Paradise Trees and The Cold Cold Sea with Legend Press I believe this is your first foray into self publishing Linda so how are you finding the process?

So many people have helped me along the self-publishing route – I’m really touched and would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone. I’ve been eying up self-publishing since The Paradise Trees came out, which was when I realised that it even existed… I was clueless about all things publishing back then, your typical hobby-writer got lucky. I can’t say that either trad or self-publishing is better – they each have pros and cons. For me, the important thing about both is that at the end, I have a book to hold. That’s what matters.

So I guess you’re a hybrid author Linda, and we all need help at various stages of writing and I’d like to know more about the team you have behind you. Who helped you pull your first indie book together until it was ready to be published?

This is actually one of the best bits about self-publishing, the contact with all the different experts involved. I had an editor, Debi, who worked on different drafts of the text with me. Then I had the help of Yvonne in San Diego who does proofreading and formatting. That really brought home to me how small the world has become – San Diego!! I found her when the person recommended by another indie-author didn’t have time for my book but recommended Yvonne in turn. The cover was created by the amazing Debbie at The Cover Collection. I found her myself on Twitter, and I really enjoyed that part of the process – pulling pictures about made a change from words!

THE ATTIC ROOM EBOOK COMPLETE

Love this cover!

If you could choose to be any character out of any book, who would you choose? And why?

That’s tricky because my favourite books are crime fiction and I really wouldn’t want to go through what some of these characters do. But I’ll go for Ruth Galloway in Elly Griffith’s books. She doesn’t have an easy time either but she’s a strong person and she has good friends around her.

St Gallen

St Gallen – Linda’s nearest town

A few quick fire ones.

Sunsets or Sunrises?

Sunrise, because then the day is still to come.

Fruit Salads or Black Jacks?

I had to google Black Jacks… I’ll go for fruit salads!

Which superpower would you like to have? And Why?

I’d like to travel through time and space. Imagine going to a different galaxy, thousands of years in the future… And what beautiful sights I’d see on my journey!

What piece of advice would you like to give your 16 year old self – if you were given the opportunity to use a time machine!?

Don’t worry, be happy! (But I’m still a worrier!)

I believe that perfect days are unplanned, BUT if you were to plan your perfect day what would it look like?

A leisurely breakfast on a lovely Greek island, then a boat trip to see some interesting temples or maybe an archaeological dig, then an hour or so on the beach and then dinner under the stars…

Thanks for joining me Linda. Let me finish by offering you huge congratulations on release day and I wish you every success for the sales of The Attic Room. I pre-ordered so I’m hoping my copy is already waiting for me. I’m looking forward to reading it!
