One of the most magical times when raising children is getting to read to, and with, them, and What If Butterflies Loved Snow? is a wonderful book to choose to do just that. I love the many questions that come from a child’s view of the world, particularly those that make you stop and think for a moment and make you realise just how much you accept without question as an adult. This is one of those. A question raised in that lovely moment as a mother tucks her child into bed. The story is short and simple with further questions batted between mother and daughter as they think through the practicalities of snow-loving butterflies but it is a perfect bedtime read, ending as it does with the child going to sleep.

The book is also wonderfully illustrated, and uniquely so, with a beautiful little girl, and if you follow the author’s blog you will know exactly who the model was, and all sorts of nature along with many characterful butterflies. The pictures are intricately drawn and the more you look at them, the more you see, especially on the double page spread. I loved the detail and care taken to include so much and it added to the story wonderfully. I have been following the birth of this book for a long time now and am delighted I bought a copy, I’m sure anyone who does will enjoy it just as much as I did.
