Welcome to my Friday Five Challenge

Get yourself a cuppa and give yourself 5 minutes.

In today’s online shopping age, readers often base their buying decisions from small postage stamp size book covers (Thumb-nails), a quick glance at the book description and the review. How much time do they really spend making that buying decision?

AUTHORS – You often only have seconds to get a reader to buy your book, is your book cover and book bio up to it?

My Friday Five Challenge is this….. IN ONLY FIVE MINUTES….

1) Go to any online book supplier,

2) Randomly choose a category,

3) Speed through the book covers, choose one which has instantly appealed to your eye,

4) Read the book Bio/ Description for this book,

5) If there are reviews, check out a couple,

6) Make an instant decision, would you BUY or PASS?

Inspired by Barb Taub’s post last week (Reasons my Kid is Crying)  I was reminded of a book given to me a couple of Christmases ago on dog shaming, so that is the category I had a look at this week. This was a craze that started, of course, on the internet a few years ago and some bright sparks, otherwise known as enterprising people have gone on to create books so as to make the most of the marketing potential.

Dog shaming

The one I chose was Dog Shaming: Canine Confessions by Susan McMullan. I mean just look at that face, how could I not choose it!

For those of you unfamiliar with this particular phenomenon when dogs have done bad things a sign is put around their neck with their particular misdemeanour on it and they have their photo taken looking, their owner hopes, suitably contrite. Some dogs are great at this and look mortified by what their bad behaviour, some clearly couldn’t give a damn…

Here is the blurb:-

Our beloved pooches bring us a world of happiness. They love us unconditionally, they never judge and they’re there for us through good times and bad. But they also chew the sofa, rip up your car seats, bark incessantly when there’s nothing there, steal food, dig up your garden and generally cause mayhem. Now, in Dog Shaming, they own up to the world with some hilarious confessions revealing just why they’re in the doghouse. And they remind us why dogs are the most wonderful, and sometimes the most infuriating, companions!

96 pages

£1.49 ebook price

£6.99 hardcover

There are 28 reviews of all levels though 18 are 5*

Buy or Pass: I would PASS – the ebook price is good but a couple of the reviews said there was difficulty reading some of the signs on the download so if you’re into this sort of thing you’d probably do better on the internet. However as a gift to give someone a laugh the hardcover version might just do the trick.

  1. Oh dear plenty of work for The Dog Whisperer then? This would need to be a hardback for me as my older style kindle has poor black and white picture quality, I’m already squinting to read the dog’s confessions from the book cover.
Yes the dog is cute, and as you say a fun book, but not one for me.

  2. I could add a few shaming dog pictures to that as well 🙂 but not for me, I don’t think. There are so many online and a dedicated website too, if I’m not mistaken.
