Yes, Wendy, wasted writing is exactly what I’m trying to avoid. Steady and slow seems to be my way forward.

At least the good thing with your methodology - while it may be slow progress, you know you’re closer to the end game when you finish a session. That must be a comfort. I never know if my subconscious brain is going to come up with a different plan and I’ve just written a whole lot which is now redundant! I do try and hang on to the old adage, though, that no writing is wasted, even if I think so at the time.

I'm not sure we can change much about the way we naturally write, Wendy. I think we simply have to accept it and work accordingly. I've tried to do things faster but it doesn't help at all, I just end up with a messy draft that needs twice as much work as it would have done had I gone slower. So that will be the way it is from now on.

Once I’m underway I can usually write quite quickly, and reach 2,000 words or more on an average day. But while I’m not a slow writer at the keyboard, I do take a long while to incubate (to use Oran Ross’s term) a book before I start writing. If I was able to plot faster I’d be able to use the advantage to publish more books! But it is what it is and I can’t see it changing any time soon.
