I chose to read Letters to Whitman as a member of Rosie’s Book Review Team. I received a copy from the author, but this does not alter my review in any way.

The poet, Walt Whitman, used to volunteer in army hospitals to look after the wounded soldiers during the American Civil War. This short story is told through a series of letters written by one of the patients, a Private Nathaniel Gwynnett, after he had to return to battle.

I found this short story fascinating. Told from only the soldier’s letters, I liked the fact we didn’t get to see Whitman’s replies, only the impact they had on Nathaniel’s next letter.

The writing is excellent and poignant as through Nat’s eyes we get to see the horrors of war and the effect they have on this poor young man. Highly recommended to all interested in the Civil War or anyone who enjoys good writing.

  1. I have to admit to an uncharacteristic addiction to Walt Whitman‘s poetry, so this book sounds intriguing.
