I chose to Read The Price of Atonement as a member of Rosie’s Book Review Team. I received a copy from the author, but this does not alter my review in any way.
This story is set in Harbor Pointe, California. Mid-October 1887. Leviticus Sinclair and his employee, Wyatt Resnik, are travelling in an uncomfortable carriage towards an inn next to the lighthouse. It quickly become apparent that the reason for their journey is the supposed haunting of the lighthouse. Ghosts, the focus for all their years of travelling together.
The mystery surrounding Leviticus, the mark on his neck, the broken pocket watch he carries, is intriguing and gradually unfurls, along with the story of why this particular ghost haunts the lighthouse, in a most satisfying way.
I settled into this story as soon as I started it, although it took me longer to work out fully what was going on, which is as it should be. The writing is excellent and it draws you in immediately. The characterisations are fully rounded and the descriptions are perfectly drawn and atmospheric. I thoroughly enjoyed this series starter story and highly recommend it to all who enjoy good writing and a well-told tale.
