The Wife, the Mistress, and the Guinea Pig & Other Stories is the 2023 Anthology put together by the u3a writers on the Isle of Arran. This writers’ group is fairly recently formed but their coming together has produced an outpouring of prose and poetry that has formed this entertaining book.
I often think the best stories are those that have been lived and this wonderful collection from eight writers includes many stories that come across as real-life experiences. I was going to pick out some favourites but honestly the list would have been far too long and, unusually for me, would even have included some poetry. Suffice to say when writers write what they know it brings together several lifetimes worth of experiences, memories and knowledge.
Beautifully descriptive, occasionally humorous, varied, evocative and often poignant I read this book in a couple of sessions as the pages kept turning. Highly enjoyable and recommended.
