Set in 2061, most people live in the government run megacities where everyone is watched and controlled. The wrong word can earn you a demerit and too many of those mean you lose your job and face eviction to one of the Hope villages. And they are not nearly as delightful as they sound.
A few live outside society and are known as wastelanders. But time is running out for them because the government has turned a blind eye to their way of life for long enough.
I absolutely love the world-building Tyler does in her books. It’s the attention to detail that is so compelling and works so well. Like, why no one in the megacities ever gets to meet older people?
I don’t think I’ve mentioned this before, but this author also comes up with the coolest names. I mean, one introduction is to King, Thea, Q and Ace. Come on.
I would issue one warning. Don’t get attached to characters. Don’t think, oh, he’s the same age as my son. I did that, and it was a big mistake. But it also says a lot about Tyler’s characters and how drawn into the story you become.
While Wasteland is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone, but where would the fun be in that? This book comes highly recommended, so as with all excellent series, start at the beginning. You won’t regret it.
I reviewed Hope (Operation Galton Book 1) HERE.
Fabulous review of Terry’s book. She is a master of world building.
She certainly is, Darlene. Thanks for reading 🙂
I haven’t read anything by Terry in ages. I wish I could speed read my very long list of book in my tbr pile.
I think I’d start on the first one in the series. I know I’d suffer from FOMO if I didn’t!
Oh, definitely start with the first one, Gloria. It’s an excellent series and I’d hate for you to miss out on anything! Thanks so much for visiting. 🙂
Loved this book!
It’s fabulous, isn’t it. 🙂
I really must get around to reading and reviewing again, Geogia. It’s ages since I read any of Terry’s books – so – on your recommendation here, I’d better start!
I hope you enjoy these ones, Judith 🙂
I’ve always loved Terry’s work, Georgia, so guessing I will, thanks. x
